The first thing I do is outline the mat on the back.  In this case I'll be making 3 openings.
Before I do any cutting I check to make sure the pins will fit in the openings I'm going to make.  Also this picture shows the tools that I use.  A razor knife and a straight edge ruler.
I try and clean up all the edges from this side of the mat as it makes for sharper edges on the other side.
Now if all worked out in the first steps the inserted piece should fit on the first try...  It does not always work tha way but practice makes perfect.
I then fill in the bottom holes with a colored paper or in this case a photo paper I printed out in red.  And here is the finished product.

Okay I was asked by Theodore to make a framing page.  While I am no expert at this I said sure.  How can you turn down a teddy Bear???  Well first of I want to say that this is by no means the only way to frame.  It is how just how I do it.  As I learn more and do more I will update this page.
